    The base library will satisfy your need for all of them with study guides, music CDs, movies in DVD and video formats, FREE access to electronic databases. Not to mention our huge selection of books in audio, electronic, and print formats.
   The library is open to everyone who has access to the base: military, dependents, civilians, and contractors who are either American or Japanese. We welcome you to the library. Irasshaimase!
Children's Corner
    We offer the TumbleBook Library -- an online collection of animated talking picture books which teach young children the joys of reading in a format they'll love.
    For a special activity with your child, come enjoy free story time on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 - 11:30 am.
Military Professional Books
   The library offers professional titles, including Chief of Staff of the Air Force books and Navy Reading List books.  We also purchase mission essential publications on behalf of most military units in Misawa.
Study Time!
   Research a term paper or prepare for an exam at the library. In addition to traditional study materials, we offer electronic databases (ask the staff for a list of addresses and passwords) and wireless Internet access.
   Carrels are available for individual study sessions, as well as a quiet study room. There is a group study room with seating for 6 and a conference room with Internet access which seats 15. Don't forget the lounge when you take a break from your studies!

Full-Text Electronic Books
    Create an account at the base library and you can borrow from any Internet-accessible PC including home and TDY! Book types include mysteries by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie; science fiction by Robert Silverberg and Kurt Vonnegut; financial planning books by Gene Walden; love stories by Jane Austen and Edith Wharton; audio book versions of Stephen King novels; western stories by Zane Grey and Max Brand; and nonfiction for research papers. Things to Know….
Loan Periods
      • DVDs / Music CDs—1 week
      • Magazines—1 week
      • Books & all other materials—3 weeks
    For renewals, add one loan period to the item. Items may be renewed via telephone, but patrons must call the library on or before the original due date.
Internet
    7th – 12th graders may use the computers with parental consent and signature on file. Parents’ signatures must be renewed quarterly.
    Younger children may access the Internet, but they must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Conference Room
     Reserve the conference room in advance. This room may be used outside of library public hours.

Overstreet Memorial Library now offers access to Thomson Gale’s Kids InfoBits, SIRS Discoverer & the TumbleBook Library

Kids InfoBits database is designed especially for students in kindergarten through grade five. It has an engaging, developmentally appropriate graphic interface, premier reference content, and the best magazines for elementary students. Kids InfoBits addresses the way kids learn and conduct research and makes it fun! Some of the content topics include the following: Animals, Plants, People, Geography, Science & Math, History & Social Studies, Transportation, Inventions & Technology, Health, Arts & Entertainment, and Sports.

SIRS Discoverer is a helpful homework / research site for children 4th grade and above. It has useful research material broken down into the following topical areas: Animals, Arts, Countries, Cultures, Drugs & Alcohol, Environment, Health & Human Body, History / Government, Kid’s Corner, Notable People, Personal Growth, Science, Social Issues, Sports, and Technology. It also has links to Web sites for kids and good reference materials that include current events, maps of the world, biographies, an encyclopedia, and the World Almanac for Kids. TumbleBook Library is an online collection of TumbleBooks, which are animated talking picture books that teach kids the joy of reading in a format they’ll love. TumbleBooks are created by taking existing picture books and adding animation, sound, music, and narration to produce an electronic picture book that you can read or have read to you. There are puzzles and games available, and children can also start learning another language through TumbleBooks. These databases are available for home use, too! Sixth Annual Haiku Contest
1 - 21 February
Contest Rules:
A maximum of four entries per person will be accepted. All of the haikus must be on one sheet, and only the haiku must be on the sheet. Please do not put the author’s name or other identifying information on the sheet.
A separate cover sheet must be included. It should have the author’s name, telephone number, post offi ce box number, category, and if the author wants the haiku returned.
The poems must be original, in English, and follow the traditional 5-7-5 syllable count (fi ve syllables in the fi rst line, seven syllables in the second line, and fi ve syllables in the third line).
Entries may be hand carried to the library or mailed to: Misawa Base Library, 35 FSS/FSDL, Unit 5019, APO AP 96319.

Rosetta Stone

One of the most prestigious online programs for learning a new language is now available at the base Library! Rosetta Stone is a premier source for achieving fluency in over 30 different languages. Overstreet Memorial Library is now offering access to this program for Misawa AB library users.
                    30+ languages to choose from!

Eligibility: Must be stationed at Misawa with an official email address. (A sponsor’s work email can be substituted)
Access: First come, first served. You must fill out an application at the Library. You will receive a username, password, and login. (Limited licenses are available.)
Policies: Accounts will be closely managed due to limited access.
 
You must be a registered Library user.
• 
Login must be activated within 2 weeks or the account will be deleted.
• 
If the account is not active for 4 consecutive weeks, the account will be deactivated.
• 
You may reactivate an account with a new application.
• 
Time restraints may be instituted at the Library’s discretion.
• 
Upon leaving Misawa, your account will be deactivated.
