Service Group Life Insurance (SGLI)
There are many instances when the member should clearly designate a specific beneficiary or beneficiaries to ensure that the proceeds are distributed to the person or persons who the insured intended to be the beneficiary(ies). Some examples are:
1. When a member has a parent who has remarried but both natural parents are living.
2. When a member is divorced and remarried, but has children living with the first spouse.
3. When a member has no immediate next of kin and wants a distant relative or friend to receive the proceeds.
Note: Please see Base Legal for assistance in coordinating a will with a specific beneficiary.

Virtual Record of Emergency Data (vRED)
National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) 2008, enacted 1 April 2008, amended the death gratuity benefit allowing members to specify any person(s) of their choosing effective 1 July 2008 for the death gratuity benefit. This can be any person(s) regardless of whether or not they are within your immediate family. However, if you do not name the beneficiary specifically, the entire death gratuity payment will be paid to your eligible beneficiary(ies) in order of precedence and will be considered a By Law designation.
