Car Corner

Mike Poole’s 1939 Ford V8 Tudor Sedan is a show stopper. This 81-year-old vehicle was purchased through social media in August 2019 from a seller in Dallas, Texas. Poole is not only the proud owner of this vehicle, but he’s also an Automotive Service Advisor for the Auto Complex. Poole coordinated all the paperwork and shipping of the car to Japan. He also did all the necessary conversions on the car so that it could meet JCI inspection regulations. The sedan’s parts and body are 90% original and one of the coolest features of the car is the Ford flathead V8 engine that hides under the hood. The Ford flathead was produced from 1936–1954, and is extremely rare and hard to maintain. Poole uses many of the same techniques, tools and knowledge on his own classic vehicle that he provides to customers on a daily basis at the Auto Hobby Center. Need help working on, transporting or caring for your vehicle? Visit Mike Poole at the Auto Hobby Center and check out his beauty of a Ford if you get the chance.

Welding Trades

for Success

The Auto Hobby Center offers welding courses so that you can learn a trade. No one knows the benefits of learning a trade more than Moira Villa, the welding instructor. Villa began welding when she was a freshman in high school. She was accepted into an elective program at her school’s career trades and technical center. She initially wanted to get into welding because “it looked cool and I’ve always been hands-on,” says Villa. The program allowed her to complete three years of trade school, alongside airspace computer science engineering students and mechanics, as half of her curriculum. She worked hard but enjoyed the craft so much that she used any free time she had to put fi re to metal. Villa graduated as the first female from the program, with six certifications to be proud of. At just 18 years old, Villa was offered a full-time job at $18 an hour welding all day, just as she loved to do in high school. Learning this trade set Villa above her peers and up for success from a young age.

Villa started working at the Auto Hobby Center because she enjoys gearing classes toward her students’ individual schedules and learning paces. She makes sure that each class is safe and that her students are having a lot of fun. This is done by teaching them how to operate the machines and letting them bring in their own projects and ideas to weld. She says that most don’t realize the convenience of learning this trade until they begin classes with her. “You’ll start to notice everything around you in your environment that is welded on buildings, or even think twice about getting on a rollercoaster that isn’t welded well.”

Villa enjoys making the students’ schedules her schedule and seeing the moment when it “just clicks” in a student’s mind as they’re learning welding skills.

Learn how to weld with Moira at the Auto Hobby Center and see how much fun you can have challenging yourself. You might be surprised at what kind of doors you can open, or seal.
