Car Corner

“The first time I ‘drove’ my grandfather’s car was shortly after my family moved to Cape Cod in the summer of 1966,” says Bill Tuttle (MSgt, USAF retired), proud owner of a 1957 Ford Del Rio Ranch Wagon. Sporting original doeskin tan paint and Sears Allstate white wall tires, the old Ford won the “People’s Choice Award” at last year’s Misawa International Motor Show. Tuttle let us know a bit about the car, its journey and the maintenance that’s taken place at the Auto Hobby Center to keep it in top shape. “My grandfather manned the brakes, clutch, accelerator and gears while I man-handled the huge steering wheel. I was five years old. I always loved my grandfather’s car, and he knew it.” Tuttle inherited this beauty when his grandfather passed in 1985, the car had only 51,000 miles on the clock. Due to Air Force assignments, he had to leave the car in a storage unit while finishing tours. In 2015, he was finally able to ship her to Japan. Having sat in storage for 23+ years, the vehicle had many parts that needed to be refurbished or replaced. Once Tuttle had all of the needed parts in-hand, he coordinated flat-bed transport with the Auto Hobby Center and began the preparation for registration in Japan. Thanks to the skilled help and guidance of the Auto Hobby Center staff, he was able to complete all of the repairs and pass the safety inspection at the Hachinohe LTO with flying colors. “I couldn’t have done it without the help of MSgt (retired) Mike Poole and his 26+ years of vehicle maintenance experience,” says Tuttle. 2018 repairs and maintenance included brakes, clutch, accelerator and gears. Tuttle worked with his own five-year-old son on the project, who also man-handled the steering wheel of his great-grandfather’s wagon. The beautiful car has been cared for well, thanks to a lot of love from the Tuttle family and the professionals at the Auto Hobby Center. The wagon “certainly turns a lot of heads in the Land of the Rising Prius.”
